Esplegares
Village
Esplegares is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, whose name comes from the stretches of lavender that grow naturally on its land. With 30 inhabitants (INE 2025), its municipal area is bounded on the east by the river Ablanquejo, the border with Huertahernando, and includes in its southern zone, covered with Scots pine, part of the Alto Tajo nature park. During the Civil War, on 4 April 1938, the village was heavily bombed by aircraft and burned. It preserves the church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, with a Romanesque baptismal font, the hermitage of Santa Catalina, the destination of an annual pilgrimage, the ruins of the hermitage of Santa Quiteria and the Beber well, of Arab construction and restored at the end of the 19th century.
