What to see and do in Torrejón del Rey

Torrejón del Rey
Village
Torrejón del Rey is a municipality of the La Campiña comarca (Guadalajara), with 6,435 inhabitants (INE 2025), located at about 721 metres altitude by the bank of the river Torote; it preserves a small exclave within the province of Madrid, Los Barrancos and La Canaleja, the only territory of Castilla-La Mancha isolated within another autonomous community. Its earliest historical reference is linked to the conquest by Alvar Fáñez in the time of Alfonso VI; after the reconquest, the Archbishopric of Toledo incorporated it into its archpriesthood of Alcolea de Torote, until in the 15th century John II incorporated it into the jurisdiction of Guadalajara. It preserves the church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa, in late Mudejar style, and the Casa Grande, a 16th-century mansion in the old town.
Church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa de Torrejón del Rey
Monument
The church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1996, is the main monument of Torrejón del Rey. Its construction began in the early 16th century, adjoining an older bell tower, originally a Muslim watchtower rebuilt in Mudéjar style in the mid or late 14th century. The church has a single rectangular nave of rammed earth and brick, and a polygonal apse with three blind semicircular arches. The current door, in the west wall, was built between 1540 and 1543 by Pedro de la Bodega, while the original façade of the south wall was sacrificed in the early 20th century for the parish house. The complex has undergone numerous renovations.
Casa Grande of Torrejón del Rey
Monument
The Casa Grande of Torrejón del Rey (La Campiña, Guadalajara) is a 16th-century building, in the same late Mudéjar style as the parish church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa, preserved in the old town of the municipality. Beside it, in the Plaza de la Fuente, stands a large 18th-century mansion.
