What to see and do in Marchamalo

Marchamalo
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Campiña, in the province of Guadalajara, crossed and cut in two by the Henares canal, opened in the nineteenth century to water a market-garden vega, the river floodplain, of chard, green beans, peppers and cardoon; it preserves the church of la Santa Cruz, of the sixteenth century, of brick with Mudéjar coffered ceilings and rebuilt after damage in the Civil War, and the palace of the Ramírez de Arellano family, a seventeenth-century mansion on the Plaza Mayor, and it recovered its municipal independence on 1 January 1999 after having been part of Guadalajara since 1973.
Church of la Santa Cruz de Marchamalo
Monument
A 16th-century temple built in brick with Mudéjar coffered ceilings, damaged during the Spanish Civil War and later rebuilt using brick, masonry and cement, materials with which its original fabric was recovered.
Palace of los Ramírez de Arellano
Monument
The Palacio de los Ramírez de Arellano is a 17th-century manor house on the plaza Mayor of Marchamalo (La Campiña, Guadalajara), an example of palatial architecture with a rusticated entrance door, ornamental stone carving and a heraldic coat of arms on the façade.
Henares canal as it passes through Marchamalo
Nature
The canal crosses the town centre of Marchamalo and divides it in two, in a setting of fertile lowland on the right bank of the Henares. It is an irrigation canal of about 40 kilometres that allows some 7,800 hectares to be irrigated between the left bank of the canal and the right bank of the river. It was already planned in the 18th century by the Count of Aranda under Charles III; the concession was granted to the Sociedad Ibérica de Riegos in 1859, the route was modified in 1863 and 17 kilometres were opened in 1867. Works resumed after 1926 under the Confederación del Tajo, until its definitive inauguration in 1954.
The independence of Marchamalo
Curiosity
The municipality of Marchamalo was annexed as a district of Guadalajara on 8 January 1973, by decision of the Council of Ministers. The process of regaining its independence was driven by a referendum held on 17 November 1996, in which 82.5% of voters came out in favour of separation. The agreement that restored Marchamalo's status as a municipality, with effect from 1 January 1999, was signed by José María Bris and Juan Armando Monge, and two days later the first independent town council took office, with eleven councillors.
Festivities of el Cristo de la Esperanza
Activity
Marchamalo celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of the Santísimo Cristo de la Esperanza on the first weekend of May.
The market gardens of the Henares canal
Food and drink
The canal opened in the nineteenth century made it possible to irrigate the plain and gave the countryside a market garden of mild vegetables: chard, green beans, peppers and cardoon, which reach the markets of the provincial capital and take the lead in the comarca's seasonal stews.
