What to see and do in Alovera

Alovera
Village
Alovera is a municipality of La Campiña, in Guadalajara, at 644 m altitude on lowland farmland next to the river Henares, with 14,526 inhabitants (INE 2025). In its municipal area, 6th-century Visigothic eagle-shaped fibulae in gold, bronze and glass, with cloisonné technique, were found, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, along with a 1st- or 2nd-century Roman funerary cupa, discovered in 1999 during works at the church of San Miguel, dedicated to Pompeyo Fusco by his wife Antonia Melusa. From the 16th century it was a settlement of farmers on lands of the monasteries of San Bartolomé de Lupiana, Santa Clara and San Bernardo; the church of San Miguel was built then, with three naves and a tower, with a retable by the González brothers. Philip IV granted it town status in 1626 as Villahermosa de Alovera.
Church of San Miguel de Alovera
Monument
The church of San Miguel de Alovera is a three-nave temple, with a tower and covered atrium, work directed between 1569 and 1587 by the master builder Nicolás de Ribero; the vault was not completed until 1690. The main altarpiece, in 17th-century classicist mannerism, is the work of the González brothers (Juan, Pedro and Francisco) and shows Christ crucified at the top, with the tabernacle and an image of San Miguel at the centre. A secondary altarpiece, dedicated to San Gregorio, the work of disciples of Juan de Borgoña and Juan Correa de Vivar, brings together eight panels of 70 by 70 centimetres on the life of the Virgin and the childhood of Christ. In the sacristy is kept a painting of the Pietà, in Flemish mannerism attributed to Willem Key, from the mid-16th century, with ceiling paintings by Rafael Pedrós.

Curiosity
Eagle-shaped fibulae of the 6th century made of gold, bronze and glass using the cloisonné technique were found in the municipal district; they are now kept in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.
Villahermosa de Alovera
Curiosity
On 30 January 1626 King Philip IV granted Alovera, in the district of La Campiña in Guadalajara, the title of town under the name of Villahermosa de Alovera, separating it from the jurisdiction of Guadalajara. The monarch immediately sold the new town to Lorenza de Sotomayor for 6,525,000 maravedís, who thus became the first Marquise of Villahermosa, with the right to collect tributes and appoint the mayor. The marquisate still exists today in the hands of a family from Madrid, though now without those privileges.
