The independence of Marchamalo Curiosity · Marchamalo, La Campiña, Guadalajara Image of Marchamalo, not of the place itself. The municipality of Marchamalo was annexed as a district of Guadalajara on 8 January 1973, by decision of the Council of Ministers. The process of regaining its independence was driven by a referendum held on 17 November 1996, in which 82.5% of voters came out in favour of separation. The agreement that restored Marchamalo's status as a municipality, with effect from 1 January 1999, was signed by José María Bris and Juan Armando Monge, and two days later the first independent town council took office, with eleven councillors.
