What to see and do in Hita

Hita
Village
Hita is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 336 inhabitants (INE 2025), the town of the archpriest Juan Ruiz, who in the 14th century wrote the Libro de Buen Amor and to whom, since 1961, a medieval festival has been dedicated that each July performs his texts in the open air. The marquis of Santillana had it walled in 1441, and from that enclosure remain the Puerta de Santa María, with a pointed arch and the Mendoza coat of arms. The church of San Juan Bautista, from the 13th and 14th centuries, Mudéjar, with a 16th-century Herrerian tower, holds a coffered ceiling and tombstones from the nearby church of San Pedro, today in ruins and the festival's venue since 2018. The plaza del Arcipreste, a former medieval market, preserves the homes of Hita's Jewish merchants up to their expulsion in 1492.
