Cañizar
Village
Cañizar is a municipality in the La Alcarria comarca, in Guadalajara, with 78 inhabitants, watered by the river Badiel. It belonged to the jurisdiction of Hita after the reconquest of the late 11th century, passed in the 14th century to the seigniory of Íñigo López de Orozco and was then, until the 19th century, the property of the dukes of the Infantado, until in 1672 its residents paid 2,200 ducats for the privilege of becoming an independent town. It preserves the parish church of la Santa Cruz, from the late 16th century, in brick and limestone rubblework; the church of San José, from the 15th century and Mudéjar in style; and, facing la Santa Cruz, the palace of the Romos, built in the late 18th century by the family of cardinal Judas José Romo and left unfinished.
