Íñigo López de Mendoza, marquis of Santillana and lord of the town, ordered it walled in 1441. Of that enclosure there remains the Puerta de Santa María, with a pointed arch and the Mendoza coat of arms, and a good part of the curtain that climbs the hill up to the castle.
