Valdearenas
Village
Valdearenas is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, with 88 inhabitants, situated in the middle stretch of the valley of the Badiel river, a tributary of the Henares, where the Alcarria plateau sinks down towards the Campiña. The terrain, rolling and dry-farmed, gives way to orchards beside the river, with scrubland and minor game fauna on its banks. The single settlement rises on a hill at 964 metres over the left bank of the Badiel, with a well-preserved traditional adobe hamlet. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the 13th century and remodelled between the 16th and 17th centuries, now lies in ruins; it also retains the manor house of the Morterero family, from the 18th century, and celebrates San Roque on 16 August.
