Alcocer
Village
Alcocer is a municipality in the La Alcarria comarca, in the province of Guadalajara, situated beside the Buendía reservoir, in the former seigniory of the Hoya del Infantado. Its name comes from the Arabic al-Quṣayr, “the little palace”, and the place began as an Andalusi farmhouse later converted into a fortress to defend the crossing of the Guadiela river. After the reconquest, Alfonso X granted its seigniory to Mayor Guillén de Guzmán, who in 1262 founded the monastery of San Miguel del Monte, moved to the town in 1373. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a transitional work between Romanesque and Gothic, with more than a thousand stonemasons' marks, and holds its main festival on the third Sunday of September in honour of Nuestra Señora del Espinar.
