What to see and do in Cañaveruelas

Cañaveruelas
Village
A municipality in La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, 77 kilometres from the provincial capital, in the valley of the Buendía reservoir. The earliest references to Celtiberian settlements in the area date from the 2nd century BC; five kilometres away, next to the reservoir, lies the site of Ercávica, a Celtiberian city conquered by Tiberius from which Cañaveruelas took its demonym, and three kilometres away is the Servitano Monastery, near which the settlement may have originated. Its church of the Virgen de la Paz, from the 16th century, has three naves with round arches and a wooden coffered ceiling, and houses a diocesan museum with pieces of goldwork, mantles and chasubles. It also preserves the hermitage of San Blas, the village's patron saint, whose feast is celebrated on 3 February. It has 110 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Roman city of Ercávica
Monument
Site of the ancient Celtiberian and Roman city of Ercávica, located five kilometres from Cañaveruelas above the Buendía reservoir. Already mentioned in the year 179 BC during the campaigns of Tiberio Sempronio Graco, from the 2nd century BC onward it took on a Roman character, with walls, a forum, a basilica, temples and baths, and under Augustus, around 15-14 BC, it attained the rank of municipium, with its own mint that struck coinage under Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula. It reached its peak in the 1st and 2nd centuries, went into decline from the 3rd century, and was abandoned between the 4th and 5th centuries. The archaeological park, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), can be visited via a paved and signposted five-kilometre path from Cañaveruelas.
Church of la Virgen de la Paz de Cañaveruelas
Monument
16th-century temple with three naves and wooden coffered ceilings, which houses a diocesan museum. The naves are separated by round arches and covered with a wooden framework; the tower, square in plan, displays hanging cartouches and is topped with an iron cross. The diocesan museum it houses brings together pieces of goldwork, mantles, choir books and chasubles.
San Blas in Cañaveruelas
Activity
Patronal feast of Saint Blaise in Cañaveruelas, patron saint of the village, celebrated on 3 February with religious acts centred on its stone hermitage. It is a small ashlar hermitage with a rectangular plan, with the main nave painted white and a garden at its entrance; inside it keeps a small altarpiece and a carving of the saint, of Armenian origin.
