Escamilla
Village
Escamilla is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, situated at 1,020 metres above sea level in a raised basin that surrounds the town itself, and today has barely 65 inhabitants. In the mid-20th century it enjoyed its greatest prosperity thanks to lavender cultivation, of which the ruins of the old distillery still remain; its abandonment brought decline and heavy emigration, which reduced the population from the 591 inhabitants of 1960 to little more than a hundred by the year 2000. It preserves remains of a castle and walls and the 15th-century palace of the Antelos family. Its parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Purificación was built between the 15th and 18th centuries, with a baroque tower completed in 1774, and the feast of the Cristo del Amor is celebrated on the third Sunday of September.
