Yémeda
Village
Yémeda is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, beside the río Guadazaón, whose rich market gardens were already cultivated by the Romans; nearby, according to the Antonine Itinerary, stood the Roman mansio of Valebonga, probably on the site of the present-day spa, which draws on springs of sulphurous water. It has 18 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 60 in the mid-19th century. Its castle, whose first historical record is the grant made of it by Alfonso VIII to Diego Jiménez, gave rise to a hamlet of the Marquisate of Moya devoted to agriculture; in 1520, during the Comuneros revolts, the marquis Juan de Cabrera severely punished Yémeda for its participation. The town centre preserves a square layout of barely 3.2 hectares.
