Cardenete
Village
Cardenete is a municipality of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in Cuenca, north of the Guadazaón river, which later joins the Cabriel. It is dominated by the castle that Andrés de Cabrera, first Marquis of Moya, had built around 1522; it also preserves the 16th-century church of the Asunción, the neoclassical hermitage of San Antonio de Padua and an 18th-century town hall. Its most notable festivities are the Sanochaores, from 9 to 15 August, in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción, with the symbolic opening of the Olmo, emblem of the organising peña, and a closing with a padlock on the 15th after the procession and a migas contest. It has 479 inhabitants, compared with the 1,582 of the mid-19th century.
