Chumillas
Village
Chumillas is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 49 inhabitants, situated at 1,060 metres in a mountainous area covered with pine forests where the Gritos river rises. It preserves a church of Romanesque design and El Torrejón, one of the eight old settlements in which, according to tradition, the village was originally established, a fortified tower that today houses the water tank. Between 1974 and 1983 it was merged, together with Olmeda del Rey, Almodóvar del Pinar, Solera de Gabaldón and Monteagudo de las Salinas, into the short-lived municipality of Almodóvar de Monterrey, until a royal decree of 1983 undid the merger. The patron saint festivities of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción are celebrated in August, and on 11 September the feast of the Santísimo Cristo de la Luz is held.
