Olmeda del Rey
Village
Olmeda del Rey is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 129 inhabitants (INE 2025), founded after the capture of Alarcón at the end of the 12th century. Its name comes from the elm trees (olmos) that populated the banks of the Gritos river; it was called Olmeda de las Valeras from 1587, to distinguish it from other places of the same name, and adopted its current name by royal order of 1829. The village sits in a horseshoe shape at the foot of the San Pedro peak, whose summit, El Pingorote (974 m), may have held an old castle. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, with a 16th-century wrought-iron screen and Baroque altarpiece, a 17th-century town hall and the former 18th-century hospital, and grows saffron under a protected designation of origin.
