Las Valeras
Village
Las Valeras is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, formed by Valera de Abajo and Valeria, with 1,528 inhabitants (2025) over 112.96 km². In its municipal area stands the Roman city of Valeria, built in the 1st century BC on a rocky spur above the río Gritos and over a Celtiberian settlement; it preserves the forum, a monumental nymphaeum, the cryptoporticus and the so-called Roman hanging houses, and it was an episcopal see in Visigothic times. The site was destroyed and refounded several times during Muslim rule, until Alfonso VIII ordered its reconquest between 1157 and 1217. On 18 March 1959 the village of Valera de Arriba was renamed Valeria, and in 1971 it merged with Valera de Abajo to form the present-day municipality.
