What to see and do in Cueva del Hierro

Cueva del Hierro
Village
Cueva del Hierro is a municipality in the Serranía Alta district, in the province of Cuenca, with 27 inhabitants (INE 2025), which owes its name to an iron mine whose exploitation dates back to pre-Roman times, archaeologically documented from the second Iron Age by the Celtiberians and at its greatest splendor during the Roman occupation, when the ore was used to make weapons and tools. Mining activity continued, intermittently, until the mid-20th century. Today part of its galleries can be visited, extending over more than five kilometers of tunnels, always with a guided tour, and next to the mine there is a mining interpretation center displaying the most common minerals and the evolution of extraction techniques.

Curiosity
The village's name comes from the mine itself: the Romans used its ore to make weapons and tools, and the activity continued intermittently until the middle of the 20th century.
