A name brought from Alcalá de Henares Curiosity · Santa María del Val, Serranía Alta, Cuenca Image of Santa María del Val, not of the place itself. The village's name comes from Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Val, patron saint of Alcalá de Henares, a devotion that reached this mountain hamlet. The village, already described in Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary in the mid-19th century, has its parish church dedicated to Saint Bernardine of Siena and also has the hermitage of the Holy Christ of Mercy. Today Santa María del Val has just over 55 inhabitants. Photo: Rubitaz (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Santa María del Val
