What to see and do in Villarta

Villarta
Village
Villarta is a wine-growing municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 853 inhabitants (INE 2025), between Villalpardo, Iniesta and El Herrumblar. Its name recalls an old Roman-era supply warehouse; it was a hamlet of Iniesta until it obtained, together with Villalpardo, the title of town in 1729, from which they separated in 1908. Its parish church is dedicated to the Dulce Nombre de Jesús, and its stone wayside shrine serves as a stop on the processional route of the Virgen de Consolación. In the area known as Cuco de Gallina, the Peña Rodera preserves a Bronze Age settlement, and the Fuente la Teja spring is a traditional gathering place for residents.
Church of el Dulce Nombre de Jesús de Villarta
Monument
The parish church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Villarta appeared in the 19th century, according to Madoz's description, as an annex of the parish of Villarpardo, served by a lieutenant of the mother church. It is the main religious building of this wine-growing town in the Manchuela Conquense.
Peña Rodera
Nature
Peña Rodera is a rock formation of peculiar shape, sitting atop a hill in the Cuco de Gallina site, the most representative in the municipal territory of Villarta. The rocky landscape of the surroundings recalls that of the Ciudad Encantada de Cuenca. A Bronze Age settlement has been documented at the site, evidenced by the abundance of pottery and other remains found among the rocks.
Fuente la Teja spring
Nature
The Fuente la Teja spring is located on the path leading to the Villarta mill and is highly valued for the quality of its waters: even residents of neighbouring villages come to enjoy it, making it a traditional gathering place for the town's residents.
Wayside shrine of Villarta
Monument
The humilladero of Villarta is a small stone altar within a little shrine, situated at 814 metres of altitude at the midpoint of the 17-kilometre route travelled by the Virgin of Consolation between Iniesta and her sanctuary during the Pentecost procession. It serves as a resting place for pilgrims along that stretch of the route.
Festivities of la Vendimia de Villarta
Activity
The Grape Harvest Festival of Villarta is celebrated from 17 to 21 August, with tastings of the wines produced in the village and popular activities. It is a very well-attended festival, with a good turnout of visitors from Valencia and other parts of Spain, in which the village's quintos (young conscripts) play a prominent role every year.
