Villares del Saz
Village
Villares del Saz is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 499 inhabitants, situated at 851 metres of altitude in the provincial comarca of La Mancha Alta. It belonged to the lord of Abanilla, Guillén de Rocaful, who bequeathed it to his children in 1331, and in 1440 King John II of Castile granted its lordship to his chief falconer, Pedro Carrillo de Huete, remaining linked to the seigneurial estate of the Carrillo de Mendoza family. The present-day municipality was born in 1842, when the regent Baldomero Espartero united by decree the two neighbouring villages of Villar del Saz de don Guillén de Arriba and de Abajo, separated by a street called la Raya. It preserves the church of Santa Eulalia de Mérida and the hermitage of Jesús Nazareno, celebrated on 3 May.
