Zafra de Záncara
Village
Zafra de Záncara is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, situated at 950 metres of altitude, with remains of walls and a castle and a street layout of Muslim origin. It was conquered in 1179 by Pedro Manrique de Lara, lord of Huete, in a legendary combat inspired by the fight of David and Goliath against the Moor Zafra, and later passed through the lordship of don Juan Manuel and the Ruiz de Alarcón family before being incorporated into the marquisate of Villena, which Juan Pacheco bought in 1458. It was called simply Zafra until the 1916 reform of municipal names. With 92 inhabitants entirely devoted to agriculture, it is the birthplace of Fernando Casado de Torres e Irala (1754-1829), commander general of the Corps of Engineers of the Real Armada.
