What to see and do in Uclés

Uclés
Village
Uclés, in La Mancha Conquense (Cuenca), has 230 inhabitants (2025) at 863 metres of altitude. Inhabited since pre-Roman times, in the 9th and 10th centuries it was the capital of a small independent Muslim kingdom under the Banu Di-l-Nun, until Christians occupied it in 1085 after the conquest of Toledo. Today it is dominated by the monastery begun in 1529 on the old Andalusi fortress, the mother house of the Order of Santiago and known as the Escorial of La Mancha; before its gates in 1108 was fought the battle in which the Almoravids defeated the Castilian army and the only son of Alfonso VI died, and since 2006 it has given its name to a wine denomination of origin.
Monastery of Uclés
Historical milestone
Begun in 1529 on the remains of an Andalusi fortress, it was for centuries the chief house of the Order of Santiago, installed here since 1174. Its cloister and its Baroque façade earned it the nickname of the Escorial of La Mancha.
The battle of Uclés of 1108
Historical milestone
Battle fought on 29 May 1108 at Uclés (Cuenca) between the Christian troops of Alfonso VI of León and the Almoravids of Ali ibn Yusuf, who had already defeated Alfonso VI earlier at Sagrajas (1086) and at Consuegra (1097), where the Cid's son died, and who in 1102 had conquered Valencia. After the death of Yusuf ibn Tashfin in 1106, his son Ali decided to attack the kingdom of León via Uclés, a strategic point since Celtiberian and Roman times, and put his brother Tamim ibn Yusuf in command of the army. The Almoravid troops defeated the Castilian army at the gates of the town; among the roughly three thousand dead was Sancho Alfónsez, Alfonso VI's only male son, which left Castile without a direct heir.
Wines of the Uclés Designation of Origin
Food and drink
Designation recognised in 2006 that covers vineyards spread over the sierra de Altomira, in Cuenca and Toledo. Its reds are made above all with tempranillo, here called cencibel, on calcareous soils and at considerable altitude.
