Villarrubio
Village
Villarrubio is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in Cuenca, with 211 inhabitants. According to tradition, it owes its name to a bell found buried with the inscription “Soy del Villar”, to which “Rubio” was added because of the reddish colour of the local clay soil; nearby there were once two other hamlets, San Benito and Sicuendes, now vanished. It belonged to the Order of Santiago, owner of the nearby monastery of Uclés. Its parish church, built mostly in the 17th century, preserves a restored wooden coffered ceiling and a dome. In the first half of the 20th century a flour mill was built that is still working. On the bend of the old N-III road that crosses the municipal area, the singer Nino Bravo died on 16 April 1973; he is remembered today with a small monument beside the road, now the A-3.
