Almendros
Village
Almendros is a municipality in the La Mancha Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, with 240 inhabitants (INE 2025) and a continental Mediterranean climate, situated less than four kilometres from Villarrubio and Tribaldos. Its name may come from the Latin amandula ('almond'), due to the abundance of almond trees in the area. The church of the Invención de la Santa Cruz, built of masonry, preserves a Gothic section from the mid-15th century and a Renaissance chancel and transept from 1569, with a main altarpiece from the late 17th century and a tower attached to the chancel with four openings for bells; the chapel of the Concepción, from the 16th century, in turn houses a baroque altarpiece. At the September patron saint festivities, residents perform a Moors and Christians pageant through the streets.
