Fresneda de Altarejos
Village
Fresneda de Altarejos, in the Cuenca comarca of Serranía Media, sits at 902 metres of altitude on rugged land of pine and rosemary scrub defined by the streams tributary to the Júcar river, which forms the natural boundary with Valdetórtola and La Parra de las Vegas. In the mid-19th century the municipal area, described as "covered with scrubland, pines and rosemary", had 330 inhabitants, compared with the 35 today. Among its residents are Salvador López Palacios, the municipality's first democratically elected mayor, and Pedro Valera Álvarez, decorated in the Africa war of the 1920s; in the local cemetery rest the remains of the diplomat Pedro Valera Lorenzo, an official of the UN and the FAO. The village celebrates its patron saint festivities from 23 to 26 August in honour of San Bartolomé.
