Altarejos
Village
Altarejos is a municipality in the La Mancha Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, which also includes the settlement of Poveda de la Obispalía and the hamlet of Malpesa. It lies 33 km from the provincial capital and at about 940 metres above sea level; its residents are known as altarejeños and number 193 (INE 2025), a figure that can multiply to around 1,500 people during the summer months. Its main building is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, of great monumental character, and on its land stands the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Torre, patron saint of the town. In the mid-19th century the town had 536 inhabitants, a population that has declined over the years due to the ageing of its residents.
