Montalbo
Village
Montalbo, in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, province of Cuenca, shares with the neighbouring municipality of El Hito the lagoon of the same name, a saline wetland of great interest for birdlife, notable for its biodiversity. It has 703 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 1,141 in the mid-19th century, when its economy, already described at the time in Madoz's Diccionario, was based on grain, wool and the manufacture of saltpetre. Its notable residents include the photographer and filmmaker Guillermo Zúñiga and the physician and researcher Marina Sánchez Calleja, born in 1993.
