Almonacid del Marquesado
Village
Almonacid del Marquesado is a municipality in the La Mancha Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, with 412 inhabitants, situated in La Mancha Alta near the Roman ruins of Segóbriga. Its name is of Arabic origin, from Al-Monaster, "the Monastery"; reconquered in the late 12th century, it belonged to the Tierra de Alarcón until 1305, when it passed to the Lordship of Villena, whence comes the epithet "del marquesado". It received the privilege of villazgo in the late 15th century. The village is best known for La Endiablada, a festivity celebrated in the first days of February in honour of the Virgen de la Candelaria and San Blas, in which more than a hundred devils with large cowbells on their backs accompany the saints in procession and dance inside the parish church itself.
