What to see and do in El Hito

El Hito
Village
El Hito is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 163 inhabitants over 41.22 km². Its most distinctive feature is the El Hito lagoon, an endorheic and saline wetland it shares with Montalbo, a Special Protection Area for Birds since 1998 and a Nature Reserve since 2002. It is a wide, shallow depression, with saline waters and highly fluctuating flooding periods, with almost no marsh vegetation but extensive grasslands. It is a stopover and wintering site for the common crane, which arrives from northern Europe on its way to Africa and increasingly often spends the whole winter there. In the town centre, the church of the Assumption and a 16th-century town hall are preserved.
