El Provencio
Village
El Provencio is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in Cuenca, with 2,327 inhabitants, at 701 metres above sea level, beside the Záncara river, into which the Rus and the Charcón stream flow; its economy is based on the farming of garlic, sunflower, wheat, vegetables and fruit trees, and on sheep, pig and poultry farming. In Muslim times it was a compulsory stopping point for caravans, at the crossing of the tracks that came down from Cuenca and the royal road from Toledo and Madrid toward the Levante. It was founded in the 14th century by the infante don Juan Manuel, lord of Alarcón. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with three Gothic and Renaissance naves, was completed around 1583, and it preserves two historic bridges: that of the Rey, from the 11th-12th centuries, and that of the Camino Real, from 1782.
