Atalaya del Cañavate
Village
Atalaya del Cañavate is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 91 inhabitants (INE 2025), on mostly flat land with some hills, at the crossroads of the Eastern, Alicante and Guadiana motorways. Its name, of Arabic root, means "high place or watchtower", after the tower that once stood on the Castillejo hill; "del Cañavate" was added in the 19th century to distinguish it from another Atalaya in the province of Cuenca. It was one of the hamlets of Alarcón documented in 1184, after the conquest by Alfonso VIII, and later part of the Marquisate of Villena. Its parish church of the Assumption, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 2001, has a two-bay bell-gable, a Renaissance doorway with fluted Doric columns and a coffered ceiling inside. At the highest point of the village stands the square watchtower that gives the town its name.
