Vara de Rey
Village
Vara de Rey is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 466 inhabitants (INE 2025), formed by the settlements of Vara de Rey, El Simarro and Villar de Cantos, on the watershed between the Júcar and Záncara basins; an old Tertiary riverbed, today visible as an embankment, once linked this area with the Guadiana. It belonged to the alfoz of Alarcón and later to the marquisate of Villena, and after nearly a century of disputes with Sisante and San Clemente over its jurisdiction, Charles V granted it the status of villa. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the palace of the marquis of Valdeguerrero, and celebrates “los mayos”, four traditional songs dedicated to the Virgin, to the parish priest, to the young women of the village and to the Holy Cross.
