What to see and do in Villaconejos de Trabaque

Villaconejos de Trabaque
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, whose valley floor holds close to a hundred and ninety dug-out cellars, originating in Visigothic times and many still in use to make wine in the traditional way; the growing of wicker was for generations one of the pillars of its economy, today displaced by cereals. The areas of Los Villares, La Perejila and Fuente de los Baños have yielded Roman, Visigothic and Andalusi material over an Iberian Iron Age settlement, and the parish is dedicated to San Juan Bautista.

The church of San Juan Bautista is the parish church of Villaconejos de Trabaque, dedicated to the patron saint who gives his name to its two main feasts: the Natividad de San Juan Bautista, on 24 June, and the Martirio de San Juan Bautista, on 29 August. Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary, in the mid-19th century, described it as having no notable architectural merit, and also mentioned a Concepción hermitage at the end of the village's promenade.

The cultivation of osier willow in the vega of Villaconejos de Trabaque (La Alcarria Conquense, Cuenca) was for generations one of the economic mainstays of the village, today displaced by cereal crops. A photograph of the vega with osier plantations, dated to the 1980s, documents the survival of this crop up to those years.
