Cañamares
Village
Cañamares is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 457 inhabitants (INE 2025), founded in the Early Middle Ages by people from La Rioja who arrived in the Escabas valley, which is the origin of the patronage of San Millán and its link to San Millán de la Cogolla. The river forms two gorges, towards Fuertescusa and Priego. It was a manorial town of the Carrillo de Albornoz family, present on its coat of arms. It preserves the Renaissance parish church of San Millán, with a star-ribbed vault over the presbytery, and on Calle Los Olmos a medieval house of the family of Cardinal Gil de Albornoz. On the third weekend of August a pilgrimage to the Virgen de la Dehesa is held, and on 12 November the feast of San Millán Abad.
