La Frontera
Village
La Frontera is a municipality of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in Cuenca, with 155 inhabitants, whose name recalls its medieval position between the lands conquered by Alvar Fáñez in the time of Alfonso VI and those still in Muslim hands in the 11th century. The oldest surviving book about the town dates from 1558 and deals with the boundary markers with neighbouring villages; before that it was known as “Titos”. In 1486 Juan Hurtado de Mendoza, lord of Cañete, founded in his favour the entailed estate (mayorazgo) of the town, and in the 17th century its lands and pastures passed to the Marquis of Palacios. It preserves the Baroque parish church of San Andrés Apóstol, from 1656, the former stronghold (casa fuerte) of the Marquis of Palacios, later the rectory house, and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Belén, from 1782.
