What to see and do in Canalejas del Arroyo

Canalejas del Arroyo
Village
Canalejas del Arroyo is a municipality in the district of La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 153 inhabitants, which was called simply Canalejas until 1916, when del Arroyo was added to its name. Crossed by a single stream between the hills and plateaus of the Alcarria, its northern boundary is marked by the Guadiela river before it reaches the Buendía reservoir; the village stands at 801 metres. It lives from agriculture, chiefly wheat, barley and olives, and from livestock farming. Its main religious building is the church of the Asunción, with Baroque elements, in a village that once had as many as five hermitages. The festivities of San Mamés, the village's patron saint, on 17 August, are joined by the pilgrimage of the Virgen de Embía on 8 September.
Church of la Asunción de Canalejas del Arroyo
Monument
The parish church of Canalejas del Arroyo (Cuenca), under the invocation of Our Lady of the Assumption, has a baroque altar. The municipality also came to have five hermitages: those of San Roque, San Mamés and the Virgin of the Envía, together with the smaller ones of San Isidro and San Antonio, the latter located in the centre of the village.
Pilgrimage of la Virgen de Embía
Activity
Traditional pilgrimage of Canalejas del Arroyo, in the Alcarria of Cuenca, dedicated to the Virgin of the Embía and celebrated on 8 September. It is one of the three festive dates on the municipality's annual calendar, together with the feast of San Mamés on 17 August.
The added name del Arroyo
Curiosity
Until the reform of municipal nomenclature of 1916, a royal decree that changed the name of 573 Spanish municipalities to avoid confusion, the village was simply called Canalejas. The surname added, del Arroyo, does not refer to the Guadiela but to the single stream that runs through the town. The Guadiela marks the northern boundary of the municipal territory, opposite Villar de Ladrón, before entering the Buendía reservoir.
