What to see and do in Albendea

Albendea
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, whose church of la Asunción preserves a Romanesque apse and southern doorway of the thirteenth century and stands over what was a castle, and which also has the mausoleum-chapel of Llanes, a late Roman building reused as a chapel and considered one of the oldest preserved on the Iberian Peninsula. Its district, beside the wooded banks of the Guadiela and the Escabas, holds the pinewood of Monte Ardal, and keeps the memory of a Republican airfield of 1937.
Hermitage-mausoleum of Llanes
Monument
The Ermita Mausoleo de Llanes, in the municipal territory of Albendea, was a Roman mausoleum from the mid or late 4th century that later served as the head of a hermitage, as an occasional shelter for travellers, as a manger and, finally, as a shelter for shepherds. The head of the building still stands, formed by three semicircular apses around a square central space, each covered by a slightly pointed barrel vault, while the central bay displays a groin vault. Beneath this structure lies a crypt with a Greek-cross plan, the only one detected in this geographical area. Built with brick on the inside and tufa stone on the outside, it also retains the beginning of a semicircular body next to the south apse, of a function not fully clarified, which may have been the base of a tower.
Church of la Asunción de Albendea
Monument
Gothic-Romanesque church of Albendea, in the Alcarria of Cuenca, located on the municipality's square and declared a bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1992. It was built, according to local tradition, on what had been a castle; from the 13th century it preserves the Romanesque apse, with an arrow-slit window through which light reaches the tabernacle of the high altar, and the south doorway, with a splayed round arch with plain roll mouldings on small columns. It consists of three aisles of four bays covered with groin vaults, to which the left-hand aisle was later added as the population grew, together with the bell-gable. In the 19th century the interior was covered with plasterwork, today deteriorated by damp, and the building has recently been restored.
Monte Ardal
Nature
An extensive pine wood in the municipal district of Albendea, close to Priego, beside the wooded banks of the rivers Guadiela and Escabas.
The Republican airfield of Albendea
Curiosity
The municipal territory keeps the memory of a Republican airfield built in 1937 for the Civil War and of a century-old link with Spanish military aviation, made visible in the manoeuvres habitually carried out on its land by the UME, the Guardia Civil and the Army and Air Force. In 2025 this link was commemorated with an exhibition entitled La Alcarria, origen de la Aviación Militar, with materials lent by the Ejército del Aire, and with a Flag Tribute ceremony held on 30 August in the plaza del Coso, in which the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base took part.
