Church of la Asunción de Albendea Monument · Albendea, La Alcarria Conquense, Cuenca Gothic-Romanesque church of Albendea, in the Alcarria of Cuenca, located on the municipality's square and declared a bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1992. It was built, according to local tradition, on what had been a castle; from the 13th century it preserves the Romanesque apse, with an arrow-slit window through which light reaches the tabernacle of the high altar, and the south doorway, with a splayed round arch with plain roll mouldings on small columns. It consists of three aisles of four bays covered with groin vaults, to which the left-hand aisle was later added as the population grew, together with the bell-gable. In the 19th century the interior was covered with plasterwork, today deteriorated by damp, and the building has recently been restored.
