What to see and do in Arandilla del Arroyo

Arandilla del Arroyo
Village
Arandilla del Arroyo is a municipality in La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, set beside the Vindel river, at 905 metres above sea level and about 74 kilometres from the provincial capital, near Valdeolivas, Albendea and Alcantud. Until the 1916 reform of municipal names it was called simply Arandilla. It is today one of the least populated municipalities in the province, with barely 14 inhabitants, compared with the 159 it had in the mid-19th century. The Baroque painter Pedro Ruiz González (1640-1706) was born there. Its festivities are held on the second weekend of August and on 17 September.

Curiosity
The baroque painter Pedro Ruiz González (Arandilla del Arroyo, around 1640 - Madrid, 1706) trained in Madrid with Juan Antonio Frías y Escalante and, more decisively, with Juan Carreño de Miranda, whose influence marked his later work. Although his first biographer, Antonio Palomino, held him to have been born in Madrid, it is documented that he came into the world in Arandilla. He also worked as a painting valuer at court, and among his surviving works stands out the small canvas Jesucristo en la noche de su Pasión, today in the Museo del Prado. He died in Madrid in 1706 and was buried in the church of San Millán, for which he had painted three pictures that were lost in a fire in 1720. Arandilla del Arroyo is today one of the least populated municipalities in the province of Cuenca.
