Village
Municipality of the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, in the province of Ciudad Real, split off from Chillón in 1927 and crossed from south-east to north-west by the river that gives it its name, between wooded banks and dehesas of holm oak closed to the south by the Peña de Doña Justa, of 803 metres. It preserves the parish church of San Sebastián, of the fifteenth century, and the sites of Los Balasanes and La Tejera, with Roman and Visigothic remains and Caliphal pottery of the tenth century; Juan García de la Hinojosa was from here, who took part in the expedition of Vasco Núñez de Balboa that sighted the Pacific in 1513.
Monument
15th-century church dedicated to San Sebastián, patron saint of the town, whose feast day is celebrated every 20 January. The poor quality of the materials used in its construction has required continual repairs throughout its history.
Monument
Puente de las Arenas (Bridge of the Sands), over the río Guadalmez, in the municipality of Guadalmez (Ciudad Real, Valle de Alcudia). It is a 19th-century civil engineering work made up of six semicircular arches, resting on cylindrical-plan cutwaters, typical of the bridge engineering of the area at that time.
Nature
Cueva del Candil, a cave located in the sierra de La Moraleja, in the municipality of Guadalmez (Ciudad Real), which preserves visible traces of rock art from the Neolithic period: on its walls the outlines of the old paintings can still be made out. The cave was probably inhabited during the Neolithic.
Monument
The archaeological sites of Los Balasanes and La Tejera are located in the municipality of Guadalmez, in the Valle de Alcudia. At Los Balasanes ruins with a Roman and Visigothic presence are preserved, while at La Tejera remains of a Roman-era villa have come to light. Close to both, on the slope of the Cerro Abulagar, lies the site of La Calera, from the caliphal period, where a bowl with epigraphic decoration bearing the inscription Al Malik ('the king') was found, belonging to the royal workshops of the Medina Azahara period, from the 10th century.
Monument
A monument linked to the land distribution of 1516, one of the historical landmarks that recall the formation of the municipal district.
Nature
An 803-metre summit in the Sierra Morena foothills that bound the south of the municipal district, alongside Cerro Prieto and Cerro de la Plata, in a setting of dense holm oak woodland.
Nature
The río Guadalmez rises in the municipality of Cardeña (Córdoba) and flows for about 90 km in a north-westerly direction, marking a large part of the boundary between the provinces of Córdoba and Ciudad Real, including the municipality of Guadalmez, to which it gives its name, until it empties into the Zújar reservoir, already in Extremadura; it is the longest tributary of the río Zújar. With a gentle relief and calm current except in stretches with rocky outcrops, it runs between two peneplains, the valle de los Pedroches and the Valle de Alcudia, dominated by dehesas and farmland. It is a seasonal river, heavily dependent on autumn and winter rainfall, though it retains pools of water in summer thanks to impermeable substrates; holm oak woods predominate among its wooded formations.
Curiosity
Juan García de la Hinojosa, a native of Guadalmez, took part in the expedition of Vasco Núñez de Balboa that sighted the Pacific Ocean on 25 September 1513.
Curiosity
Guadalmez, in the Valle de Alcudia (Ciudad Real), did not achieve municipal independence on the first attempt: from 1869 onward, several separatist initiatives by the hamlet against the town of Chillón followed one another, all of them thwarted, until in 1927 it finally managed to break away for good, taking 7,190 hectares from Chillón and becoming a municipality in its own right.
Activity
The main festivities of Guadalmez, in honour of its patroness Nuestra Señora del Rosario, are held from 11 to 13 August and are the most important fair and festival of the summer in the town.
Activity
Feast of San Sebastián in Guadalmez (Valle de Alcudia, Ciudad Real), patron of the local parish. It is celebrated on 20 January, in the middle of winter, with a procession and traditional acts in honour of the saint.
