What to see and do in Alamillo

Alamillo
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, in the province of Ciudad Real, first cited in the Settlement Charter of Almadén of 1417 and whose church of San Antonio, erected in 1707, was served for centuries by a curate appointed by the parish priest of Almadén, a reflection of its dependence on the mining town. Its built-up area is bounded by the Grande and Chico streams before they add their flow to the Guadalmez, and the district takes in part of the dehesa of Castilseras, the wooded pastureland of holm and cork oak, as well as historic wayside inns of the royal road such as those of El Molinillo and El Alcalde.
Parish Church of San Antonio
Monument
A church erected in 1707 and served for centuries by a deputy appointed by the parish priest of Almadén, a reflection of the town's historic dependence on the mining town.
Dehesa of Castilseras in Alamillo
Nature
The dehesa de Castilseras is a natural area in the west of the province of Ciudad Real covering some 9,000 hectares spread across the municipalities of Almadén, Almadenejos and Alamillo. It belonged to the Crown from the last third of the 18th century and is today owned by the State, administered by the public company Mayasa. Its fauna includes populations of fallow deer, red deer, roe deer and wild boar. It has been governed since 1913 by regulations approved by royal order, and a 1981 law provided for its use for agricultural, livestock and forestry exploitation within the plan for the economic and social conversion of the Almadén comarca.
Arroyo Grande and Arroyo Chico Streams
Nature
The Grande and Chico streams mark the boundary of Alamillo's urban centre (Valle de Alcudia, Ciudad Real) along its lower edge, next to the street known as El Portugal; the Chico stream joins the Grande about a hundred metres before reaching the village. Downstream, once joined, the watercourse changes name and becomes El Saladillo until it flows into the río Guadalmez, thus shaping the town's immediate landscape.
The first documented mention, in 1417
Curiosity
Alamillo is first mentioned in the Almadén settlement charter of 1417. The Relaciones Topográficas of Felipe II of 1578 still describe a place of barely 13 households.
The inns of the camino real
Curiosity
Historic roadside inns such as the Venta del Molinillo and the Venta del Alcalde stood in the municipal district, mentioned in classical Spanish literature as stops along the road.
Holy Saturday: the burning of dolls
Activity
Holy Saturday ritual in which effigies are burned and Judas is tossed in a blanket, considered Alamillo's most important popular tradition. It is an agrarian ritual mixing the pagan and the religious, symbolising the end of winter and the resurgence of life in spring; the dolls are stuffed with firecrackers that go off during the burning.
Rice with duz
Food and drink
Dessert of rice cooked with milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon peel, taken well chilled and set. Its name preserves the popular Manchegan way of saying dulce and it appears at the patron saint festivities of the towns of the comarca.
