What to see and do in Garlitos

Garlitos
Village
Municipality of 510 inhabitants (2025) at 554 m altitude. It attained the title of villa in 1635 and later became part of the domains of the Duke of Béjar. It preserves the 15th-century parish church of San Juan Bautista. Within its territory are the granodiorite formations of Los Molizares, site of former lead and zinc mining.
Embalse de La Serena
Nature
Built between 1985 and 1991, the embalse de La Serena (La Serena reservoir), with a capacity of 3,232 cubic hectometers over some 14,000 hectares, is the largest in Spain and the third largest in Europe by capacity; its tail reaches the municipal territory of Garlitos.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista
Monument
15th-century stone-and-brick parish church. It incorporates a 1613 chapel, the work of stonemason Juan Bautista de Montenegro.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Nazaret
Monument
Hermitage of Garlitos's patroness, which reuses Roman inscriptions related to the ancient Miróbriga. On the feast day of the Virgin, the procession goes through the village to the sound of tambourines, led by three banners.
La minería y el caolín de Garlitos
Historical milestone
Garlitos worked the galena and lead-zinc mines of Las Minillas and El Borracho since Roman times. The so-called 'Tierra Blanca de Garlitos', a high-quality kaolin, was sold commercially until the 1960s and even supplied the Real Fábrica de Porcelana del Retiro.
