Valley of the Guadalmez River Nature · Guadalmez, Valle de Alcudia, Ciudad Real The río Guadalmez rises in the municipality of Cardeña (Córdoba) and flows for about 90 km in a north-westerly direction, marking a large part of the boundary between the provinces of Córdoba and Ciudad Real, including the municipality of Guadalmez, to which it gives its name, until it empties into the Zújar reservoir, already in Extremadura; it is the longest tributary of the río Zújar. With a gentle relief and calm current except in stretches with rocky outcrops, it runs between two peneplains, the valle de los Pedroches and the Valle de Alcudia, dominated by dehesas and farmland. It is a seasonal river, heavily dependent on autumn and winter rainfall, though it retains pools of water in summer thanks to impermeable substrates; holm oak woods predominate among its wooded formations.
