What to see and do in Capilla

Capilla
Village
Small municipality of 142 inhabitants (2025) at 558 m altitude, on the boundary between the comarcas of La Siberia and La Serena (on the banks of the Zújar, on the southern slope of the Sierra del Torozo). A Roman town identified with the Celtiberian Miróbriga Turdulorum once stood here; it was conquered by Castile in 1226 and later belonged to the Order of the Temple and then the Order of Alcántara. The 14th-century church of Santiago Apóstol may have reused an earlier mosque.
Castillo de Capilla
Monument
Rock-set fortress of Muslim origin, with an irregular polygonal plan and six cylindrical towers, which commanded the routes between Mérida, Sevilla, Córdoba, Almadén and Toledo. Rebuilt in 1236 by Fernando III after the conquest of Córdoba, it passed to the Order of the Temple until 1312 and then to the Order of Alcántara, becoming part of the House of Béjar in the 15th century. It was declared Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1933 (today a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection)). It survives in ruins but can be visited.
Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol de Capilla
Monument
A Mudejar-style temple, possibly a mosque converted into a church in the 14th century; a 1991 restoration revealed 15th-century murals with religious and war scenes.
Capilla bajo la Orden de Alcántara y la Casa de Béjar
Historical milestone
After its castle was conquered by the Kingdom of Castile in 1226, Capilla passed in 1309 to the Order of Alcántara, and in 1382 Diego López de Stúñiga bought it for the House of Béjar.
Romería de San Sebastián de Capilla
Activity
A pilgrimage in honor of San Sebastián in Capilla.
