What to see and do in Villamanrique

Villamanrique
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, which was called Bellomonte in the thirteenth century until in 1474 Rodrigo Manrique, master of Santiago, emancipated it from Torre de Juan Abad and gave it his surname, the same lineage from which the poet Jorge Manrique comes. In its district stand the castle of Montizón, a Santiago fortress over the river Guadalén, and the Torres de Xoray, remains of the Islamic fortress of Eznavejor abandoned around 1213; its church of San Andrés Apóstol, built between 1515 and 1607, combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, and at the festivals of San Miguel bull-runs documented since the eighteenth century are held.
Castle of Montizón
Monument
Fortress built by the Order of Santiago in the municipal area of Villamanrique, at a strategic point on the Reconquest frontier on the Guadalén river. Given its structure, it is believed to have been of Christian construction, since during the Muslim period the watch over this pass belonged to the nearby castle of Ibn Xoray, now in ruins. The poet Jorge Manrique went on to become commander of Montizón. The castle, privately owned, is well preserved and was declared a national historical-artistic monument in 1983, today holding the category of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Church of San Andrés Apóstol de Villamanrique
Monument
The church of San Andrés Apóstol, built between 1515 and 1607 combining Gothic and Renaissance elements, is the main monument in the town centre of Villamanrique, in the province of Ciudad Real. It is a single-nave church dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, already described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España and in Inocente Hervás y Buendía's Diccionario histórico geográfico de la provincia de Ciudad Real. It was declared a bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the category of monument, on 8 October 1991, by a decree published on the 30th of that same month in the Diario Oficial de Castilla-La Mancha.
Towers of Xoray
Monument
Remains of the Islamic fortress of Eznavejor, located about three kilometres from Villamanrique on the road towards Torre de Juan Abad, popularly known as the Torres de Xoray or Joray. The fortress was abandoned in 1213, a year after the Christian victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, and Francisco de Quevedo immortalised it in a poem that begins: Son las torres de Joray.
San Miguel bull runs of Villamanrique
Activity
Festival of the Archangel Saint Michael in Villamanrique, held from 29 September to 3 October, with cattle runs that pass along Calle Jerónimo Frías and through the Plaza de España, covered with sand and fenced with trailers from which the public follows the spectacle. These cattle runs have been documented since the 18th century.
From Bellomonte to Villamanrique
Curiosity
The town was called Bellomonte in the 13th century, and in 1474 Rodrigo Manrique, master of Santiago, freed it from Torre de Juan Abad and gave it his surname. The poet Jorge Manrique came from this line.
