What to see and do in Albaladejo

Albaladejo
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, governed after 1214 by the Order of Santiago from the commandery of Segura de la Sierra and an independent town only from 1566; its parish church is a Renaissance temple of Latin-cross plan with an elaborate bell tower, raised beside the site once occupied by the old Andalusi fortress. In the El Puente area the remains of a fourth-century Roman villa with mosaics of notable quality are preserved, and among its traditions are the Danza de las Ánimas and the Carrera del Niño, an Easter procession in which the image of the Risen Christ is carried at a run through the streets.

Roman villa of El Puente
Nature
The Roman villa of El Puente, in Albaladejo (Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real), is a 4th-century building used for both residential and agricultural purposes, laid out around a peristyle, located about two kilometres south of the present-day town centre. It had various rooms, a thermal bath area and a complex architectural layout. It preserves polychrome mosaic pavements of notable artistic quality, and its ruins survive today as one of the most notable testimonies to the Romanisation of the municipality.
Dance of the Souls of Albaladejo
Activity
Traditional dance from La Mancha, also called the function of souls, preserved in Albaladejo as one of the most characteristic folk manifestations of the Campo de Montiel. It consists of dressing a four-metre pole with eight ribbons, as many as the dancers taking part in it.
The Race of the Child
Activity
La Carrera del Niño is the Easter procession of Albaladejo, in the Campo de Montiel district (Ciudad Real), held during Holy Week. In it, the image of the Risen Christ is carried at a run on a bier through the fields and streets of the village until it is presented before the image of the Virgin, who at that moment exchanges her black mourning mantle for a white one, while drums and bugles announce the joy of the Resurrection.
Festivities of Santiago Apóstol de Albaladejo
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Albaladejo, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, are held from 23 to 26 July: four days of procession and popular festivities in honour of the municipality's patron saint, in the height of summer.
Albaladejo and the Order of Santiago
Curiosity
After 1214 the Order of Santiago governed Albaladejo from the commandery of Segura de la Sierra. The town did not obtain the title of independent villa until 1566.
