The price of Cózar's independence Curiosity · Cózar, Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real Image of Cózar, not of the place itself. Cózar (Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real) was dependent on Montiel from 1274, when Gonzalo Ruiz Girón granted the Fuero de Montiel, by which Cózar and Alcubillas were handed over to that town; other sources place the event in 1275, under the mastership of Pelayo Pérez, of the Order of Santiago. Independence came in 1554, when Cózar paid the Crown 1,350,800 maravedís after nearly 280 years of subordination. Photo: B25es (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cózar
