What to see and do in Madrigueras

Madrigueras
Village
Madrigueras is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, with 4,670 inhabitants (INE 2025), 32 km north of the provincial capital, with whose municipal area it borders to the south across the Júcar; it forms part of the metropolitan area of Albacete, created in 2006. Its name may come from the Arabic magrid, meaning pipe or conduit, referring to a spring that supplied the town, as recalled by the area known as La Cañería. It belonged to the Tierra de Alarcón and to the province of Cuenca until 1833; its church has an 18th-century Rococo façade attributed to Martín de Aldehuela, and on Calle Libertad stands the neo-Renaissance Casa de Casto. It hosted units of the International Brigades during the Civil War and is, together with the provincial capital, the only municipality that celebrates the First of May as a local holiday.
Hermitage of San Jorge de Madrigueras
Monument
The hermitage of San Jorge, in Madrigueras (La Manchuela, Albacete), is in Renaissance style, from the 16th century and heavily restored. It stands on the cerro de San Jorge, at an altitude of 715 metres, compared with the 687 metres of the town centre; the hill, which contains a recreational area, is a leisure spot for those who make their way up to the hermitage.
Apse of the hermitage of San Pedro y San Pablo
Monument
The surviving remnant of a hermitage of the 13th to 15th centuries, one of the oldest medieval vestiges in the town of Madrigueras.
Rococo façade of the church of Madrigueras
Monument
An 18th-century Rococo doorway attributed to the architect Martín de Aldehuela, who also produced notable works in Cuenca and Málaga.
Casto House
Monument
A neo-Renaissance building of the late 19th and early 20th centuries on Calle Libertad, an example of the municipality's bourgeois architecture.
Roman mill and dam of Cuasiermas
Monument
The remains of a mill and a dam of the 2nd and 3rd centuries found at the site of Cuasiermas, beside the Júcar valley.
Madrigueras and the International Brigades
Curiosity
The municipality of Madrigueras took in units of the International Brigades during the Civil War; inscriptions and drawings by volunteers from 1937 and 1938 were preserved in the cells of its Brigades' prison. Over the course of the conflict, these units brought together foreign volunteers from more than fifty countries, most of them workers recruited by the communist parties or veterans of the First World War rather than professional soldiers; the French were the largest contingent, with close to ten thousand men, many of them arriving from Paris. The Brigades fought in the defence of Madrid and in the battles of the Jarama, Guadalajara, Brunete, Belchite, Teruel, Aragon and the Ebro, before being withdrawn from the front on 23 September 1938.
May Day in Madrigueras
Activity
Madrigueras is held to be the only municipality in the province, besides the capital, that officially celebrates International Workers' Day as a local holiday.
La emancipación de Madrigueras
Historical milestone
Madrigueras belonged to the Tierra de Alarcón and afterwards to Villanueva de la Jara; as its population grew it obtained during the eighteenth century the privilege of villa status, and in 1833 it passed from the province of Cuenca to the newly created province of Albacete.
El ajo de mataero
Food and drink
A dish tied to the pig slaughter throughout La Manchuela: pig's liver boiled and pounded in the mortar with bread, oil, paprika and spices until it forms an unctuous paste eaten hot, dipping bread into it, in the cold days that follow the slaughter.
