What to see and do in Navas de Jorquera

Navas de Jorquera
Village
Navas de Jorquera, called Navas de Jorguera until 1857, is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, 35 km from the provincial capital and at 708 m of altitude. It has 521 inhabitants (INE 2020). A 1st-century Roman road, the so-called carril cruzado, crossed its municipal area from Cenizate towards Mahora, and remains from that period have been located nearby, such as the Cerro de las Cabezas or Villares de la Matosa. It obtained villazgo (town status) in 1663 but was not established as its own municipality until 1833; its parish church is dedicated to San Gregorio Magno, and cucos, circular dry-stone agricultural constructions, are scattered across its territory. It also houses the only open-air temple of the Comunidad Odinista de España-Ásatrú.

Curiosity
Navas de Jorquera, in La Manchuela (Albacete), belonged to the State of Jorquera, a territory granted by Alfonso X that later passed to the Marquisate of Villena between the 14th and 15th centuries. On 31 August 1663 King Philip IV granted the place the title of town by royal charter, although its definitive municipal independence did not come until 1833, with the creation of the province of Albacete, when the village joined the judicial district of Casas-Ibáñez.
